Music, Music, Music PatternStart by creating what will represent six 78-rpm records by cutting them from sheets of black card stock. Draw a 3 3/4-inch circle for a pattern; following the illustration, cut out the two strips of circles, making sure the circles on each line touch each other. Tape the bottom and top strips together.
Do a little math and figure out what year the honoree turned 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50. Using a site such as the one listed in the resources section below, find the name of one of the best-selling songs from each one of those years.
Make "labels" for your records from 1 1/2-inch circles of white paper; use a black marker to draw the "hole" in the center of the record. Following the top curve of the label, write the name of the song. For example, "What a Wonderful World." Following the bottom curve of the label, write "1967: Don turns 10." See illustration. For the sixth label, write the year on top and "Don turns 60!" On the bottom of the label, write "Party: see flip side." Make enough copies of the labels for each invitation and glue them to the records.
Write all the party information on the back of the record strip; if the card stock is black on both sides, use a silver gel-pen. Fold up so that the invitation will fit in a small envelope. A nice touch would be to put musical note stickers on the envelopes. -
In these invitations you are going to use events and other information from the year the person was born. However, you'll start out by creating a "news release" using the following format: Type this in an old-fashioned looking font on the top half of a sheet of paper.
"For immediate release: It has been a year of unprecedented happenings, and now, today, (day, month, year of honoree's birth) creating a press frenzy, comes the birth of (honoree's name), (son or daughter) of (names of parents) in (birthplace)."
Then in the center of the paper, type in a different font, in inch-tall letters, "How Time Flies."
On the bottom half of the paper, type the following in a more modern-looking font:
"For immediate release: It has been a year of unprecedented happenings, and now, (day, month, year of party) creating a press frenzy, comes the celebration of the 60th birthday of (name of honoree) at (time of party) at (party location). A glittering crowd of celebrities is expected to attend."
Use a site such as The People History site listed in the resources section below, which gives you fascinating printable lists of events, prices and other information from particular years. Or, if you like create your own, print out the invitations with the "press releases" on one side and the year's events on the other side. Fold in thirds with the year's events side up and mail in a business envelope.
