Soap scum results from a mix of your dissolving bar soap and the calcium and mineral deposits of your tap water. Accumulated soap scum isn't merely a nuisance that can stain and discolor bathroom surfaces; it can contribute to the growth of mold and mildew. Left utterly untreated, it can even corrode the metals of bathroom drains and fixtures. While there are some fairly easy preventive measures you can take to avoid it, such as opting for liquid instead of bar soap, once you've got it, it doesn't have to stay.

    Prevention

  1. Consider using a water softener. Soap scum is a reaction of the soap to the minerals particularly prevalent in hard water. By reducing your water's hardness, you will also decrease the accumulation of soap scum.
  2. Keep It Dry

  3. Wipe out the bath or shower after each use. Soap scum needs moisture to flourish. Remove the moisture and it will not grow.
  4. Spray Remedy

  5. Distilled Vinegar Mixed with Water

Choose a natural solution before you reach for the caustic chemicals that might do you more harm than the soap scum. Mix 1 cup distilled vinegar and 1 cup water and put in a spray bottle. Spray onto surface and wipe with damp rag.
Test any cleaning product, natural or otherwise, on a small area to be certain it will not discolor surfaces.
  6. Paste Remedy

  7. Use a homemade scouring paste for stubborn soap scum. Mix 2/3 cup baking soda, ½ cup liquid detergent, ¼ cup (or more) water and 2 tbsp. vinegar. Work into a paste and use as an abrasive on tough areas.
  8. Removal Tool

  9. Use a razor blade to scrape the scum off of glass and tile. Follow up with Step 3.
Do not use a razor on fiberglass as you may damage the surface.
