- Consider using a water softener. Soap scum is a reaction of the soap to the minerals particularly prevalent in hard water. By reducing your water's hardness, you will also decrease the accumulation of soap scum.
- Wipe out the bath or shower after each use. Soap scum needs moisture to flourish. Remove the moisture and it will not grow.

Distilled Vinegar Mixed with WaterChoose a natural solution before you reach for the caustic chemicals that might do you more harm than the soap scum. Mix 1 cup distilled vinegar and 1 cup water and put in a spray bottle. Spray onto surface and wipe with damp rag.
Test any cleaning product, natural or otherwise, on a small area to be certain it will not discolor surfaces. - Use a homemade scouring paste for stubborn soap scum. Mix 2/3 cup baking soda, ½ cup liquid detergent, ¼ cup (or more) water and 2 tbsp. vinegar. Work into a paste and use as an abrasive on tough areas.

Use a razor blade to scrape the scum off of glass and tile. Follow up with Step 3.
Do not use a razor on fiberglass as you may damage the surface.
