Mason jars conjure up visions of shelves full of preserved fruits and vegetables canned at home. The jars, in use for home canning since the invention of the threaded screw top lid and seal by John L. Mason in 1858, are still in use today for home preserving and crafts. Their different shapes and sizes provide unlimited uses for creating original gift items, home or office accessories and kids' craft projects.

    Craft Ideas

  1. For a kids' project, take a large Mason jar and decorate with paint and decals and use as a piggy bank. Decorated jars are perfect for girl's hair bands, hair clips and accessories.

In the kitchen, use decorated jars to hold kitchen utensils, wooden spoons and spatulas. Decorate and fill jars with homemade jams, jellies, salsas and candy and give as gifts.

Tea, votive candles or battery operated tea candles placed inside of Mason jars decorate an outside patio or dining table. For decorative purpose, fill Mason jars with assorted colored glass gems and place in any room to add a splash of color.

Create a set of decorated pint or quart sized Mason jars to hold desk accessories such as pens, pencils, letter openers and smaller jars for paper clips and rubber bands.

For the bathroom, use Mason jars with lids to hold colorful bath salts or miniature soaps.

Use Mason jars for fresh flowers or create hand-painted jars as flowerpots for artificial flowers. The Mason jar vases can decorate the bathroom, kitchen windowsill, patio area or sunroom.
  2. Selecting Jars

  3. Mason jars come in various sizes that include half pint, pint, quart and half-gallon containers with lids and inner rings for the lids. The jars come in a standard sized mouth opening or a wide mouth opening.

Jars are available for purchase at grocery stores and online. The type of project chosen will determine the size of jar needed.
  4. Basic Supplies

  5. For craft projects using the jar and lid or just the jar, suggested supplies include assorted fabric to cover the lid, silk ribbon, glue to secure the fabric and gold or silver braid to accentuate the fabric or neck of the jar. Assorted colors of glass paint and brushes, decals, name tags to attach to jars given as gifts.

To use the jars to create vases using artificial flowers, supplies needed include a brick of florist foam, bag of moss and assorted silk or dried flowers.
