One of the amazing things about dinosaurs is that while scientists can nearly prove many things about the behemoths, there are 100 times the amount of things scientists are clueless about. One of those things is what exactly did dinosaurs look like?

Kids' imaginations run wild with thoughts of dinosaurs and prehistoric Earth, an untamed terrain, freckled with adventure and the unknown. Help kids capture that imagination with art projects about dinosaurs

Create a Prehistoric Shoe Box Scene

  1. The best part about this activity, is almost anything goes. Provide each child with an empty shoe box and a bunch of craft material: fabric, sticks and anything small enough that a young child can manipulate into the shoe box. Also provide toy dinosaurs.

Encourage the children to design what they think the world looked like when dinosaurs roamed the Earth.

Tip: This also works well with crayons and paper. No other supplies necessary. Ask the kids to draw what they think the world looked like.
  2. Sculpt a Dinosaur

  3. Depending on the age of the kids you're entertaining/educating, you can have them sculpt a dinosaur out of play dough or modeling clay. The easiest type of dinosaur to sculpt is a brachiosaurus or a brontosaurus, but part of the fun is attempting to sculpt something more difficult such as Tyrannosaurus rex or a pterodactyl.

Another trick with play dough is to make dinosaur fossils. Make flat discs of play dough, then press toy dinosaurs into the play dough to make a relief.
  4. Paper Mache a Dinosaur Egg

  5. You'll need balloons, nontoxic papier-mache paste, long thin strips of newspaper or construction paper and tempera paint with brushes.

Pour papier-mache paste into a bowl. Blow up balloons. Then let the kids sit around the table, dipping the paper strips into the paste and applying them to the balloon. Once the balloons are covered, set them aside to dry. Once dry, paint the eggs and let dry.

This can also be an educational activity by discussing dinosaurs and their eggs while making the papier-mache.
