Having beautiful skin can make you feel more confident. When you're not worrying about blemishes or other skin problems, you can concentrate on more important things. Beautiful skin is within reach for anyone who's willing to put the time into a skin care regimen, healthy eating plan and fitness.

  1. Follow a Skin Care Routine

    • Find an effective cleanser.

      A skin care routine doesn't have to be difficult or elaborate. You'll need to find products that work for your particular skin type, whether it's oily, dry, normal or combination. When buying products for your face, choose products that are compatible with your skin type. Once you choose the right products, a good skin care routine contains two essential steps: cleansing and moisturizing. Toning is optional: some people swear by it, while others feel it's unnecessary. Anyone with very oily skin may like the extra cleansing a toner provides.

      In the morning and evening, cleanse and moisturize your skin. Even acne-prone skin needs a moisturizer. It's especially important to remove all traces of makeup before going to bed, so make sure your cleanser is effective if you wear cosmetics regularly. The right cleanser will make your face feel clean, but not tight or dry.

      Wearing sunscreen during the day, particularly during the summer or anytime you'll be outside for extended periods, is essential for blocking damaging sun rays, which are drying and can lead to wrinkles as well as skin cancer. Choose sunscreens that contain a minimum SPF of 25. You can also wear cosmetics with sunscreen included in them, but SPF isn't cumulative--that is, if your moisturizer is SPF 15 and your foundation is SPF 25, your protection level is 25, not 40.

    Eat Healthful Foods

    • Eat nutritious foods.

      Following a healthy diet is important for attaining beautiful skin. Much of what shows up on the outside begins inside. When you eat a healthy, balanced diet that's full of fresh fruits and vegetables, it shows on your skin. Natural foods that are free of chemicals and preservatives don't clog your arteries or manifest in your complexion.

      Drinking at least eight glasses of water per day is also helpful for flushing toxins out of your body and keeping your complexion clear and glowing. Getting some form of exercise on a regular basis also helps with maintaining beautiful skin.

    Have Beautiful Skin All Over

    • Exfoliate dead skin.

      While many people are concerned mainly with their facial complexion, you can take steps to have soft, smooth skin all over. Use a wet pumice stone on the heels and other rough areas of your feet. At least once a week, take a bath or shower and use body scrubs to slough off dead skin. Loofahs and body sponges also slough off rough, dead skin that hides newer skin underneath.

      Once your body is clean, always follow up with lotion or cream. The best time to apply body moisturizers is right after a bath or shower. This locks in your skin's moisture.
