Tea Tree Oil for Acne

Acne, an inflammatory condition, has traditionally been treated with benzoyl peroxide or sulfur-based soaps and creams. Using these topical acne treatments can cause the skin to become even more inflamed and irritated. Luckily, studies have shown that tea tree oil can be just as effective as traditional products, without skin irritation. You can use tea tree oil in several ways, each method building on the others to help clear your skin.

    1. Cleanser

      • Start by using a tea tree oil cleanser with natural ingredients, such as Dr. Bronner's Tea Tree Liquid Soap (see Resources). Wet the skin with warm water, and pour a small amount of soap into the palm of your hands. Mix in a little water, and apply the soap to your face. Massage it onto your face, and rinse with water. Repeat this process twice a day, once in the morning and once at night.

      Spot Treatment

      • After cleansing the skin properly, soak a cotton swab in tea tree oil, then dip it in water to dilute it. Apply the mixture directly to acne blemishes, and allow the oil to dry completely. Remember to dilute the tea tree oil because, although it has no harmful side effects, it can cause mild redness if used undiluted. Use this procedure once per day, preferably at night.

      Mask

      • Applying a tea tree oil mask to active acne pustules and cysts helps to dry and clear swollen or fluid-filled acne. Mix 1 tsp. of pure clay mud mask with 1 drop of tea tree oil. Dot the mixture on acne pustules. Let it dry completely, and leave it on overnight.
