Bumble bees make good crafting projects for children of all ages. Most children have seen a large bumble bee flit from flower to flower in a garden. Talking about bumble bees and then enhancing a lesson with a bumble bee craft can be an excellent way for children to learn about these insects.

  1. Thread a needle with black thread and knot the end of the thread. Place three large black pom poms next to each other and sew them together to make the bumble bee's body. Insert the needle through all three pom poms and pull the thread tight. Insert the needle through all three pom poms again, and pull the thread tight again. Tie a knot in the thread, but do not clip the thread.

Cut a 4-inch by 6-inch piece of white tulle. Find the middle point of the tulle and cinch the tulle at the middle point so that the center is gathered together tightly and each end of the tulle expands outward. Place the cinched middle point of the tulle onto the center black pom pom. Use the same needle with black thread and sew the cinched center of the tulle to the middle pom pom. Take several stitches with the needle and thread and then tie a knot and clip the thread.

Use craft glue to attach two 2-inch pieces of pipe cleaners to one of the pom poms for antennae. Glue two googly eyes under the antennae. Allow the glue to dry completely.
  2. Bumble Bees with Hand Wings

  3. Bumblebee shape

Draw a bumble bee body shape as shown in the diagram onto white construction paper. The body dimensions should be approximately 8 inches long and 4 inches wide. Cut out the bee body and draw horizontal stripes on the body. Color the stripes yellow and black, alternating the colors. Trace each child's hands onto white construction paper and cut out the hand shapes. Glue the bee body onto a large piece of colored construction paper. Glue the cut-out hand shapes on each side of the bee body to make wings. The fingers should be extending out and the base of the hands should be against the bee body. Draw antennae at the top of the bee's head and instruct the children to make eyes and mouths on the bee head under the antennae.

Have the children draw flowers on the construction paper around the bee or make flowers out of construction paper shapes to decorate and finish the bumble bee craft.
