Trekking poles have become popular with hikers, trekker, and climbers in the past 20 years. The poles help cushion the impact on knees. Nordic walking is a newer fitness activity designed to give a workout with the use of trekking poles, and is designed to be done at a specific pace.

    Materials

  1. Leki poles are made with aircraft-quality aluminum and carbon fiber. The poles have a quick adjustment lock so you can position them at different heights for different activities.
  2. How to set a length

  3. Start by bending your elbow at a 90-degree angle. The tips of the poles should be at your heels for Nordic walking and most other activities. For hiking on steep terrain, shortening the poles a little can be beneficial, whereas for going downhill, having them slightly longer helps provide more support. Leki poles with metal tips can also be used for skiing.
  4. Technique

  5. With Nordic walking, after you set the pole height, extend your arm with the elbow just slightly bent and use the poles to push off with each stride. This gets the upper body involved and gives you a more thorough workout. When hiking or trekking downhill, use the pole to cushion each downward step by placing it just in front of you before stepping down.
