Tips on Planting Canna Bulbs

Cannas, also known as canna lilies, are plants that grow striking, vibrantly-colored flowers. The plants grow from rhizomes (which some mistakenly refer to as a "bulb"), which are hard, woody root systems akin to bulbs. Planting canna bulbs (rhizomes) is a relatively simple procedure that will result in a gorgeous display of greenery and blooms within a few months.

    Where to Plant

  1. Survey your yard a few hours after a hard, long rain. Because canna plants do not like wetness, you should plant your rhizomes in areas where the soil has drained thoroughly. Areas where puddles remain, hours after a rain, is not a suitable place to grow your canna plants.
  2. How to Plant

  3. Bury the canna rhizomes approximately 6 inches below the soil's surface. The rhizome should be laid horizontally (lengthwise), and the nubs or "eyes" should face upward. Although the plants will eventually grow and bloom if you plant with the eyes facing down, planting it correctly will allow it to grow faster, and with less stress.
  4. Basic Care of the Canna Rhizome

  5. Water the rhizome thoroughly after planting. Thereafter, water the canna frequently, with moderate amounts of water. Never over-water, but do not allow the plant's soil to dry out either. The rhizome should shoot out sprouts within a few weeks.
