Photo Frame Ideas
Photo frames can be embellished, decorated or created from scratch using a variety of different techniques and craft supplies. You can create a simple, un-fussy look or an elaborately decorative piece. Paint
-
An inexpensive plain photo frame can be decorated with a variety of painting techniques to create entirely different and personalized looks. If you are a good artist, you can paint your own design directly onto the frame. You could have a design that goes all around the perimeter of the frame, or just paint a motif in one corner. Rubber stamps and stencils are available in a virtually infinite array of designs and can be used to decorate photo frames. Apply paint to the stamp rather than dipping the stamp into paint, and press it onto a bought photo frame in a pattern or arrangement of your choice. A basic wood stain can be used to make a simple frame match the color of your décor perfectly, or use a crackle-glaze to create a textured look.
Fabric
-
You can make a fabric photo frame fairly easily without sewing a stitch. Take a thick cardboard mount and cover it in glue, then press the fabric down onto it smoothly. Cut out the center of the fabric, and fold and glue mitered corners at the back on the inside and outside corners of the frame. To make a soft, raised fabric frame, glue a layer of batting or foam to the mount before covering it in fabric. Using fabric to make a photo frame gives endless options for needlecraft decorations; the fabric can be embroidered, you can sew beads, buttons or trinkets to the fabric, appliqué fabric shapes or motifs in contrasting colors, or piece fabric shapes together before attaching it to the mount.

Wood
-
Any four pieces of wood held together at the corners can make a photo frame, even if you don't have many woodworking skills or tools. Rough driftwood can be used to make a nautical looking frame-just drill holes in each corner and tie them together with rope. Decorative wooden moldings from DIY stores can be cut to the correct length and glued to a plain bought frame, with either mitered or butted corners. You can paint or varnish the wood or leave it plain, depending on the look you are aiming for and your home's décor.
