Whether you're a parent to rambunctious children, or you like to have some quality play time yourself, there are many different ways to turn a boring old basement into an exciting playroom. Being creative and frugal can create a unique space in your home that would otherwise be used for storage, while adding an outlet for enrichment in your home.

    Family Friendly

  1. Creating a family playroom can invite more quality time with your loved ones, so finding a healthy balance of fun for both the kids and the adults is important. Dangerous items like steel-point darts should be replaced with the safer plastic tipped darts for electronic dart boards. Adding a television with family friendly DVDs can create a way for the family to spend time together, even while the adults are having their playtime.
  2. Color Scheme

  3. Avoid harsh, colors like reds, browns, and blacks. These are not cheerful colors. Instead, using colors like yellows, pinks, blues, and greens promote a feeling of ease and joy while in the playroom. You can also split the room in half and make one of the halves brightly colored to appeal to children's senses, while stimulating their eyes. Alternatively, using muted colors on the more adult side of the basement can provide a break from the bright colors.
  4. Decor

  5. Depending on what kind of playroom you are creating in your basement, the decor will determine whether or not your family will enjoy being there. Children are responsive to brightly colored items, as it triggers cognitive parts of their brain, sparking their own creativity. Avoiding adult-oriented items is a plus, with the exception of billiards tables, and child-safe dart boards.
