Creative Things to Do With Cardboard Boxes

There are more ways to reclaim cardboard than to put it in the recycle bin. There is a list of creative things to do with cardboard boxes. From decorative storage to building blocks, a cardboard box can take on a new life and be put to good use. Simple craft supplies and a little time can transform the box into beautiful pieces used for keepsakes, jewelry boxes, or even photo catalogs.

Keepsake Boxes

  • A shoe box covered and lined with cloth can turn into a keepsake or jewelry box. Texture can be added by first applying quilt batting to the surface. The covered box can be used to store small mementos or other keepsakes. Several covered boxes of different sizes can be used as stackable storage on a desk or bookshelf.

Building Blocks

  • Small cardboard boxes can be transformed into kid safe building blocks. Covered with contact paper, the boxes become very sturdy. They are lightweight and large enough for little hands. These building blocks can be stacked to form walls, towers, or (with enough) even a small play house. As the boxes become worn, they can be recycled and replaced with new ones.

Photo Box

  • A kid's shoe box is the right size for storing and displaying favorite photographs. Cover the box with pre-pasted wall paper. Apply it to the box the same way you'd apply wall paper to a wall. Place the photos inside the box like index cards. Make dividers from colored cardboard and add headings like "Family Pets," "Vacation" and "Fishing Trips."
