Backyardigans Bedroom Decorating Ideas
Pablo, Uniqua, Tyrone, Austin and Tasha are the Backyardigans, who have been captivating the attention of toddlers and preschoolers since 2004. The colorful characters have exciting adventures each day in their backyard and incorporate songs that expose children to numerous musical styles. A Backyardigans bedroom theme is a great idea for any child because of the bright colors and fun themes of the show.

Choosing Paint
-
The Backyardigan characters are orange, yellow, blue, pink and purple. With such a wide array of colors, it is possible to make either a boy, girl or neutral Backyardigans bedroom. Nickelodeon (maker of the Backyardigans television show) has its own line of paint colors available at Lowe's Home Improvement stores. It is possible to buy wall paint that perfectly matches the color of the beloved Backyardigans characters. One solid color on the walls is best in most cases, with a crisp white trim. If the person painting has some artistic ability, painting a mural of the Backyardigans back yard on one wall is a whimsical touch (see resources for example).
When choosing paint color, an important issue to consider is the child's age and how many years it will be before Backyardigans are considered a "baby show" to the child. Choosing a color that can easily grow with the child will save you the trouble of repainting in two years. For example, bright orange walls will work well with the Backyardigans theme but in eighteen months when your daughter decides she wants a princess room instead, those orange walls are going to be a hassle to paint over. On the other hand, paint the walls a friendly yellow and when your child decides she is ready for a change, you will not have to repaint. Many other themes can work with yellow walls.
Finally, choose child safe paint. Some brands of paint today are designed to take a beating. They are easy to wash when a child decides to draw his masterpiece on his bedroom wall. Many of these paints make it possible to wash off even permanent marker.
Choosing Furniture and Lighting
-
When designing a kids bedroom, it usually means the child has outgrown the baby nursery and is ready for a big kid room. This situation makes it an excellent time to leave the crib or toddler bed behind and transition to a real bed. Most children do well in a twin bed, but it may be a better investment to purchase a full sized bed that the child can grow into--or that can be used when guests come to visit.
White furniture will look nice against the background of any of the Backyardigans colors. There are several companies that make beds that look like they are made of twigs or logs. These fit nicely with the backyard theme, although they cost substantially more than a plain white bed. Again, it is best to choose furniture that the child will use for a long time rather than something that will only work with the Backyardigans theme.
For storage, look for dressers and storage tubs to match the bed you have chosen. Bookcases are great for toys and large colorful bins. One great idea would be to buy five large plastic bins in pink, orange, yellow, blue and purple and then label them with the names of the Backyardigans.
For lighting, choose lamps that are colorful. A basic torch lamp from any discount store can be transformed into a Backyardigans lamp with a little bit of blue or purple spray paint. A regular table lamp can get a makeover with Backyardigans fabric appliqués. Finally, Backyardigans night lights can be found at many discount stores and on auction websites.
Decor and Details

Brightly colored carpet squares to match the Backyardigan character colors can be spread around the room to give a burst of color without replacing the bedroom carpet. Carpet squares are also fabulous for preschool games, so they would serve a second purpose in the room as well.
Bedding can be purchased with the Backyardigans characters printed on the sheets and comforter. Another option, however, is to choose plain white sheets and then a second color from the Backyardigans characters. For example, if the wall color was pink, a yellow or purple comforter would work well. Top the bed off with throw pillows to match all five characters.
Decorating the walls can be done in several ways. Nickelodeon does sell Backyardigans wall art that can be purchased in stores or online. Another idea is to buy cheap picture frames at a dollar store and paint them to match the characters. The frames can be used to frame art work done by the child. On Nickelodeon's Nick Jr website, there are coloring pages of the Backyardigans that can be printed. The child can color these pictures and they can be framed and hung on the walls as decorations for the Backyardigan themed room.
The final touch that every Backyardigans bedroom needs is a complete set of character stuffed animals. They are made by TY (yes, the beanie baby company) and cost about eight dollars each.
