When glazing your piece of pottery, you can use a few different techniques. This is another step in the creative process of creating your own pottery. You can buy ready-to-use glazes to apply to your piece. These glazes are available through pottery stores, ceramic stores or you can purchase them online. You also can create your own special glaze by purchasing the raw materials and mixing it yourself.

This technique is an easy way to apply glazes to a piece of pottery. The possibilities are endless. You can paint your entire piece with one glaze using a large brush or make a more complex design using smaller brushes and different colors of glazes. Once the design has been done, enhance it by outlining it with a squeeze bottle filled with glaze. This is called glaze trailing.
  2. Dipping

  3. This is an easy technique to cover your piece quickly and evenly. You need to have enough glaze in your container to cover the entire piece. Holding the piece with pottery tongs, dip the item into the container in one easy, smooth motion and then pull it out. Another technique is to dip half of the piece of pottery in one glaze and the other half in another glaze color. Some potters will do one side with glaze and leave the other side without glaze.
  4. Pouring

  5. Pouring Glaze

The technique of pouring glaze can be a little messy, but is a fun way to decorate a piece. Use a cup or any container to pour glaze over the pottery. A container is held under the piece to catch the run off. You can pour one glaze onto the pottery or more colors can be poured over a base color. When pouring a different glaze next to another, the glaze will intermix at the edge and give an interesting effect. Pouring glazes on top of each other will also give you interesting color combinations. This is a good way to mix colors, like blue over yellow to get green.
