In 1989, the United Nations held a convention dedicated to creating laws that protect minors. This Convention on the Rights of the Child resulted in international laws regarding the welfare of children being instated. These are intended to keep children under the legal care of responsible adults, whether the adults are parents or not, so that the children may not come to harm.
A legal guardian is somebody who is responsible for a minor in the eyes of the law, when the parents cannot be. This is often a relative, such as an aunt, uncle or grandparent, but it can be another adult who the minor has a close relationship with. In order to become a guardian, you need to fill out some forms and petition for guardianship of the minor.
If you are ever faced with having to visit someone who is terminally ill, it can be very difficult. Whether you are going to visit, or to say good bye it can be very emotional. I don't know if you can actually be "prepared" to visit a terminally ill friend or relative. But these steps helped me prepare for just such a visit not that long ago.
Visiting a sick relative is challenging because it's painful to see someone we love in distress, and yet we must muster up the courage to put on the proverbial brave face. However, visiting a sick relative--be it a parent, child, sibling, grandparent or cousin--is one of the most important acts you'll ever perform, especially when that individual is gravely ill or wounded. Your company by their bedside will resonate with them for years to come; and if they pass away, you'll always have those last days tucked away in your memory bank.
