Hungry Mother State Park in southwest Virginia's Blue Ridge Highlands has an attention-grabbing moniker, attributed to a mother who died tragically after a Native American raid on local pioneer settlements. According to legend, the mother, Molly Marley, and her daughter escaped the attack, but the small child later was found wandering alone, murmuring only the words, "hungry mother." Twin Lakes State Park, set in Prince Edward-Gallion State Forest in central Virginia's Prince Edward County, historically was operated as two separate, racially segregated facilities until the early 1960s. The parks – one at 36-acre Prince Edward Lake and one at 15-acre Goodwin Lake – were merged in 1976, and renamed Twin Lakes a decade later.
