So you've got a lathe all set up in the wood shop and now you are surrounded by a pile of practice blocks and splinters that mark your progress in mastering this new machinery. A few nicely rounded c's and d's, maybe you have even spelled out your kid's name out of a few construction site scraps. Feeling confident, but not quite ready to turn a whole set of furniture just yet. But what to make next? Something practical, something which is not too complicated, but at the same time shows the pride you take in your craftsmanship. Looking around the shop for ideas, you spot those topless bowls and containers which have been grating on your nerves. You've been meaning to provide them with a proper cover for ages, and now your big chance has arrived. Say good-bye to plastic wrap and rubber bands and hello to the dignified, hand-crafted lids your bowls and containers truly deserve.
In this series of free woodworking videos, our home shop expert shows you how to create just such lids and in the process gives you professional tips on how to master the lathe. He also discusses how to sand and stain your lid and includes clips on the use of other workshop mainstays such as the caliper and the band saw. Once you master the techniques in these videos, you will be able to move on those grand projects you've been planning since you first set up shop.
