Decoupage is the art of decorating an object by gluing pieces of colored paper onto objects like small boxes or decorative furniture. The ancient craft was seen in early 12th century Chinese peasant art and gained great popularity in France during the 17th and 18th centuries. Objects are sometimes painted or gold leaf is used, and then paper is laminated to the object with a special varnish or decoupage glue. A variety of household objects can be used in this handicraft, including glass dishes, wooden boxes and even candles, while newspaper, magazines, wrapping paper and decorative napkins can be used as the paper for decoupaging.
