Animal tracking is used for hunting purposes and for mapping or understanding the traits of certain animals. In this sense, master trackers know animals through their tracks, beds, feces and hair as well as the other signs they leave behind. These signs include kills, drags, scratches, markings, sounds, feathers, and dens. Tracking has been practiced for centuries by humans, especially in hunter-gatherer societies. The art of tracking not only requires ability to recognize the signs but also the knowledge of what the signs and tracks may mean. She continued her training as a fifteen-year student and three-year apprentice with master tracker Paul Rezendes. She has taught outdoor skills to youth and adults for 25 years. Nick Wisniewski is an expert on animal tracks and signs. He was a long-term student and also a three-year apprentice with Rezendes, with whom he maintains close personal ties. His on-going tracking projects include animal surveys for wildlife sanctuaries and a multi-year effort to document Mountain Lion tracks and signs in southern New England.
