Automotive maintenance is essential to the upkeep of any vehicle and a key component of this maintenance is changing your brake fluid. Brake fluid is a hydraulic fluid which travels through hydraulic lines to the braking system near the wheels of your vehicle. Knowing how to check your brake fluid and when to replace it are essential to owning a car or truck, and knowing how to change your brake fluid and maintain your brake system will save you the money you would pay to an auto mechanic. There are numerous types of brake fluid, composed of various mineral oils or synthetic oils, and are distinguished by ratings by the US Department of Transportation as DOT 2, DOT 3, DOT 4 & DOT 5.
