Series Summary
Ancient dice were irregularly shaped, originally made from animal bones—which is where the phrase “roll the bones” comes from. Modern dice are usually of the six-sided cube variety, numbered with pits from one to six on each side; these pits are called “pips.” Although a pair of dice is commonly used for play, especially for board games, dice games can use as many as will fit in the hand.
As in ages past, many dice games are played in the company of gambling and drinking; though skill and enjoyment are still important elements of playing dice.
