Many people know that the ancient Egyptians used cats to fish and hunt for them, and American Colonial sailors used them to kill disease carrying rats on board their ships. And a recently discovered 9,500 year old Cyprian grave held the skeletons of a human and a cat, suggesting that the symbiotic relationship between the two is much older than most people think.
