The Hognose Snake is a type of Colubrid snake, named after it's upturned snout. This snout, or hognose, is used in sandy soils in a sweeping, side to side motion. Hognose snakes vary widely in color depending on origin and location, but range anywhere from black and white, to reds, greens, oranges, and browns. Though they do not often bite, the Hognose snake can put on a good show when feeling threatened, by hissing, puffing, or flattening their neck and raising their head like a cobra. If these tactics do not work on a predator, some Hognose snakes will roll over to their backs and play dead, while emitting a foul musk or fecal matter.
