Punk music and fashion have been intertwined since the genre's inception. The distinctive style of dress associated with the punk subculture developed over a few decades, influenced by early Kinks, Iggy's Stooges, and thousands of psychedelic garage bands that formed from the mid sixties to early seventies. In the mid 1970s bands like the New York Dolls, the Ramones and Television were playing CBGB's and Max's Kansas City, creating the scene which defined the punk look. Richard Hell's ripped t-shirts and spiky hair influenced Malcolm McLaren and Vivian Westwood's vision for the Sex Pistols confrontational image. Punk fashion has continued to evolve through the 80s and 90s, having spawned many sub-genres, including hardcore, goth, crusty-punk, and the anti-fashion of Black Flag and the early 80s L.A. punk scene.

In this series of free videos you'll get punk fashion tips from L.A. based styling experts Joylyn Everett and Bridget Smyth. They offer advice on developing your own original punk rock style, showing various examples of clothing and accessories. You'll learn how to incorporate tattoos and piercings, hair color, lingerie and bondage gear into your look, and offer tips on the best places to shop for punk clothing.
