Chinese medicine has held its own as a major form of treatment for human illnesses and ailments since at least 2500 B.C. Known as folk medicine by some, the Chinese practices have developed from the theory that the universe is a system, where everything is related, and the body is no different. The treatment strategy is to bring that system back into balance, through the use of various herbs, body manipulations, martial arts, and spiritual practices. With the scientific revolution and the advent of microbiology, Chinese medicine has faced some major challenges, both from within and without, to its credibility. Yet even today, medical science has not yet been able to dismiss this major body of thought in alternative healing, if for no other reason than the self-evident results produced from its practice.
