Mario Amaya Mario Amaya left school after completing the seventh grade. In 1970, at fifteen years old, he had already been playing the Flamenco guitar for over a year. Having exhausted the knowledge of many teachers in the Boston area, he convinced his parents to send him to Spain for a year to learn more Flamenco. After returning home from Spain in 1971, with a Manuel Contreras Flamenco guitar, he came across Irving Sloane’s book Classic Guitar Construction, and wanted to build guitars. Because he had a good guitar for reference, he could tell, after trying Sloane’s procedures, that some things were lacking in them. He realized that he needed further instruction to build the kind of guitars he wanted to build. Throughout college and graduate school he led a double life as a professional Flamenco guitarist on the side, stage name “Mario Amaya.” In 1997 he came full circle and started building guitars again using new techniques he discovered though his studies.dkdk
