The trumpet is the highest pitched brass instrument. The most common trumpet is the transposing instrument made of brass tubing. The trumpet has three piston valves that lower the pitch of the instrument. For each valve that is pressed in combination or alone, the trumpet produces a different sound. The notes are produced by the trumpeter actually blowing and vibrating their lips on the mouthpiece of the instrument. The sound of the instrument is projected by the brass bell on the end of the instrument. The oldest trumpets date back to 1500 BC and were made from bronze and silver.

Chris Cox Chris Cox is currently the Director of Bands at Eureka High School. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from CSU Fresno and a Masters of Music Performance on Trumpet from Ithaca College in Ithaca, New York. In 1993 he moved to Chimacum, Washington to assume the duty of instrumental music teacher of the Chimacum School District. In 2000, he left Washington to become the Director of Music at Eureka High School. Mr. Cox has kept a busy as a trumpet player. He has performed with the Humboldt Bay British Brass Band, Eureka Symphony, the Northcoast Brass Ensemble, Fresno Philharmonic Orchestra, Fresno Lyric Opera, Ithaca Brassworks Quintet, Cornell Symphony, Ithaca College Orchestra, the Port Angeles Symphony, Port Townsend Community Orchestra, the Turtle Bluff Chamber Orchestra, the Dukes of Dabob Dixieland Band, and was Co-Director of the Port Townsend Summer Band. He has studied with Joe Alessi, Ritchie Clendenin and Frank Campos. Mr. Cox is Past-President of the Northcoast Music Educators Association.dkdk
