SAMBO, sometimes called Sombo, is a martial arts program developed in the former Soviet Union in the 1930s. SAMBO is an acronym which roughly translates to “self-defense without a weapon,” and is one of four wrestling styles of amateur competitive wrestling recognized by the International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles. There are four systems of SAMBO which include Sport Sambo, Self-Defense Sambo, Combat Sambo & Special Sambo. Similar to Judo, the goal of SAMBO is to stop an armed or unarmed attacker in the amount of time possible.

In this series of free video martial arts lessons, you'll learn advanced SAMBO self defense techniques. After watching our video series on beginner Sambo, watch President and Co-Founder of the American Sambo Association Stephen R. Koepfer demonstrates how to build on the moves you've already learned, including advanced transition moves that won't allow your opponent time to react. He also shows you trick moves, such as using the sitting arm bar as a ploy for a knee bar. You'll also learn the throws, grips, chokes that define advanced Sambo training. So watch these free videos and learn how to defend yourself against an attacker, armed or unarmed.

 
About the Presenter

Stephen R. Koepfer Stephen R. Koepfer is the President and Co-Founder of the American Sambo Association. In 1999 Stephen met Alexander Barakov and began training in Combat Sambo, which he continues to teach today at his club, New York Combat Sambo. In addition, Stephen regularly offers national and international seminars, teaches Combat Sambo for MMA at Miletich Fighting Systems New York, and has coached his team to wins in national and international Sambo, Grappling, Combat Sambo, and MMA competitions.
