Mankind has been riding horses for centuries. Horses have carried us into battle, fierce, proud, and unafraid. They have pulled plows in the fields and carried our heavy loads. They’ve helped us travel from city to city in days instead of weeks. They’ve been essential in herding and driving our cattle. The police have mounted units that they use for crowd control in the city. Without question, horses have show themselves to be a good fit for human life, expressing characteristics of loyalty and bravery, responding to commands, and usually having a calm, approachable demeanor.

Since they are wild at heart, all horses need some sort of training before humans can ride them. Especially in horseback riding, the relationship between horse and rider must be built with trust, over time, and with the proper techniques and equipment. In these free horseback riding lessons on video, learn how to ride with Western-style equitation, which refers to the alignment and posture of the rider. This series has guidelines for intermediate level Western horseback riding forms such as loping, jogging, and cantering.

Learning how to control the horse while riding is an important skill to master. These video clips specify some methods for changing the pace and gait of your horse, as well as give you some basic guidelines for improving your horseback riding experience.
