Mankind has a special bond with one particular animal on this planet: the horse. Horses have helped us charge into battle, fierce and brave. They’ve pulled our plows and buggies, and carried our heavy loads of supplies. They’ve helped us cover long distances in short periods of time. Horses have been essential in herding and driving our cattle. And the police still use them for crowd control situations in dense city environments. Without a doubt, horses have proven to be well-suited for civilization, showing qualities of loyalty and bravery, responding to commands, and usually having an approachable demeanor.

Since they are wild, horses need some sort of obedience training before they can work side by side with humans. Especially in the sport of horseback riding, the relationship between horse and rider must be cultivated over time, with repetition of the proper techniques, and using the right equipment. In these free horseback riding lessons on video, learn how to ride with Western-style equitation, which refers to the posture and position of the rider. This series has guidelines for advanced level Western horseback riding forms such as circling at a jog, gait transitions, the figure eight, and trotting over poles.

As this is a more advanced series, pay close attention to each of the videos, and practice the techniques therein until you’ve mastered them with your horse. Each animal is unique; and a rider should learn how to respond to the specific needs of his mount in order to get a top level performance from the horse.
