Sailing is a popular pastime in the coastal areas around the world. It is a skillful hobby where a person controls the motion of a sailboat in a race, on a cruise, or on a day sailing course. Maneuvering the sailboat can be tricky and movement is controlled by arranging sails to catch the force of the wind and using that to guide the boat. Basic sail techniques include steering and turning, running, reaching, sailing upwind, reducing sail, sail trimming, hull trimming, and heeling. Kelli Gant, Steve Damm, Ed Polkenhorn Steve Damm Instructor ASA 2006 Instructor of the YearSailing still gives Steve goosebumps. Whether sailing across the bay, doing deliveries from Oregon to Cabo San Lucas, or seeing a beginning student "get it" he still gets a thrill. Steve started sailing on San Francisco Bay in the early 70's on a Laser. He got his first sailboat because his wife didn't want a canoe, as "they are too tippy."He immediately joined the Small Boat Race Association and entered every race he could find in northern California. He says that although he wasn't very good, he did have perfect attendance. It was during this time he had the good fortune of sailing on Lasers against a group of teenagers that grew up to become world class sailors. They have gone on to skipper in the America's Cup, Round the World Races, and become Olympic medalists. He thinks that maybe if he had stayed close enough, for long enough, he could have learned to sail faster. Steve teaches beginning sailing.dkdk
