Teaching your pet to do the most basic commands such as sit, lie down and heel can be a difficult challenge. There are many methods to training your dog that basically have the same strategies of positive reinforcement or negative reinforcement. When the dog obeys the command, it gets an award or treat, thus reinforcing the obedience of the command. Working dogs have to learn difficult commands such as herding animals or protecting animals. While your dog may not need to learn how to herd or protect other animals it does need to learn certain commands such as come, sit, and stay to a name a few.

About the Presenter

Elise McMahon Elise McMahon has a Ph.D. in animal behavior and has been working with both domestic and wild dogs since the early 1990s. She began studying domestic dogs in the behavior clinic of the Veterinary Hospital at the University of Pennsylvania. McMahon held a position there for two years and co-developed the Puppy Problem Prevention Program with Lois Hall. During that time, she was also working with a local trainer, Steve Lindsay. Prior to earning her degree, McMahon was a private animal behavior consultant. After completing her fieldwork on Chilean foxes, she opened a training center and began providing both private and group classes, as well as individual evaluations and consultations.dkdk
