Types of White Wine

Get to know all about white wines; learn more about wine in this free instructional video.

Series Summary

It is a common misconception that red wine is made from dark grapes and white wine comes from lighter colored grapes. The color of wine is actually determined by whether or not the skin of the grape is present during fermentation. White wine can be made from most any grape because the skin is removed from the juice before fermentation.

In this free online video guide to dessert wines, expert sommelier Mihály Fabók of Budapest's world famous Gundel restaurant offers tips and advice on how to pick a white wine. He describes the characteristics of Sauvignon Blanc, Simonsig, Olaszrizling, Chardonnay and Sancerre white wines, as well as champagne. He demonstrates how to open, test and serve wine, discusses the differences in serving and storing white wines versus red wines, and talks about the aging potential of white wines.
