How to Decorate a Dining Table

Hi, I'm Julie Heiland owner of J. Heiland Interiors in Phoenix, Arizona. Today, I'm going to show you how to decorate a dining room table with a formal place settings. We are going to start with the tablecloth. And it's always a good base layer. It gives a little sense of a formality. It covers up the table and adds a sense of style. This style of tablecloth has gold in it. And we are adding gold charger. Now charger is a base to put the plate on top of it. The gold brings out the gold in the tablecloth and it kind of unifies our theme of color. Next we add the plates. We have a china plate with the gold rim which also continues that formal feeling. I have two plates here. When you are setting the table you want to use salad fork first, the main course fork next. On the other side of the plate on the right a knife and a spoon. And then you have the napkin. Now a napkin can go either onto the side of the plate and the forks or can go on top. In this instance I am putting it on top. I think it just makes it easy for the guest to use and put in their lap. The water glass goes on the right, the wine glass goes on just a little bit below it. And the final element when you are decorating a table is a centerpiece. When you are having a dinner party you want to keep your centerpieces low and not too full so you can actually have conversation with somebody sitting across the table from you. So here I just have a little bit of greenery kind of simple. And then two topiaries one on each side. It adds interest, it brings in a little color. You could do this with florals as well. This particular arrangement is just green. And that's fine too it kind of harkens to the style of French countryside. So remember when you are decorating your table your dining table for a dinner party, start with a tablecloth. Using gold always adds a sense of formality. Chargers under your plates is a nice way to bring in a little bit more color. And keep your centerpieces low and easy to see through so you can have a conversation with your guests.
