Hi, I'm Sophie Uliano author of "The Gorgeously Green" book series, and today I'm going to show you how to make a sunscreen. Now, why make your own sunscreen at home. Well, one of the reasons is is that a lot of the sunscreens that you can go out and buy from chemists or any kind of store, supermarkets can contain all sorts of toxic chemicals that we want to try and avoid and so one easy way of avoiding this is to make your own at home. So, this is how you do it. Now, the oils that I'm using in this sunscreen have their own sunscreen properties in them so many of these oils are used in the tropics and in other countries as sunscreens in and of themselves. That would be coconut oil, that would be Shea butter, and that would be sesame oil. So, those are the three base oils that we're going to use. So, I'm going to start off taking a small stainless steel bowl and I'm going to place it in a sauce pan that has a couple of inches of water in the bottom of it and I'm just going to heat that water because I just want to slowly melt these oils. Now I'm going to put in two tablespoons of coconut, this is virgin coconut oil that you should be able to find in your local health food store. So it's not necessarily, it can be used, absolutely be used for cooking but it can also be used and often is used in skin care. So I've got two juicy tablespoons of this lovely virgin coconut oil. Now the next ingredient is one tablespoon of Shea butter, very very moisturizing and as I said before has its own sunscreen, natural sunscreen properties in it and then finally that's all a little bit messy there, I'm going to put in half a teaspoon of sesame, this is pure sesame oil, unrefined, there we are and I'm just going to wait for those oils and butters to melt. Right, it looks like the oils and butters have melted, risk burning myself here, but it's actually not too hot. Now I'm going to pour this into a glass measuring jug, like so and now I am simply going to add half a teaspoon of aloe vera gel, aloe vera and the most important ingredient, I'm going to add two teaspoons of zinc oxide powder, there's a little bit I've got to get out of this bottle but there we are, in it goes. I'm going to whisk this together. Now the reason you're adding the zinc oxide is zinc oxide is the best sunscreen, full spectrum, UVA, UVB rays and this will give you a sunscreen of round about 30 SPF so pretty good and not only is this a really good safe sunscreen but it's so emollient and it smells really really beautiful, has that lovely coconuty smell. Voila, that is it, beautiful, homemade sesame sunscreen. So remember, it's much better to do it yourself and to do it gorgeously.
