Hi, I'm Hilary Talbott, Acupuncture Physician and Clinical Herbalist. Today, we will discussing acupressure for IBS or Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Now, Irritable Bowel Syndrome is usually comprise of a mix of constipation and loose frequent bowels, kind of alternating between the two. And there's almost always a stress component where it gets worse under stress. So, in Chinese medicine we refer to that as a spleen liver disharmony or a wood earth disharmony. So, the point I'm going to show you today is called liver 13, it's located on the end of the, free eleventh rib and this point is significant because it's located on the liver channel, but it's also the front Mu point of the spleen; meaning that it's the abdominal control point of the spleen. So, daily acupressure on this point can help to regulate your bowels. To find this point, you're just going to use your hand and you're going to come in close to the, the laterals or the, the border of the ribs and you're just going to stroke your hand down until you come to the first free rib. And you'll feel this because it kind of sticks out and oftentimes it's actually kind of ticklish on people on yourself and it may actually be quite tender if you're experiencing acute flare up of IBS. So, you can massage both of these points at the same time; if you're not too ticklish; using your thumb or if you need a little bit lighter pressure, the pads of all four fingers. Now, there are other patterns that can contribute to IBS; but, this is probably the most common that I find in today's day and age. So, I encourage you to seek out your local acupuncture physician and give acupuncture a try. It's amazing how fast they can turn around a lifetime of IBS. I'm Hilary Talbott and that was acupressure for IBS.
