Hi, I'm Hilary Talbott, Acupuncture Physician and Clinical Herbalist. Today, we will be discussing acupressure for constipation. Now, there are many different reasons why one can be experiencing constipation. In fact, a lot of women just think that it's a normal part that their bowel should move initially every couple of days instead of daily. This is not the case. You can have a functioning bowel system that moves daily no matter who you are. So, there's many different patterns of disharmony that can lead to the constipation and when you visit your acupuncture physician, they're actually going to ask you all kinds of questions including what your stool actually looks like to help us differentiate what is happening to lead to the constipation. But today, I'm going to show you a point for acupressure that gives symptomatic relief of the act, of the constipation. This point is known as triple burner 6 or triple energizer 6. It's located on the triple burner meridian which starts between the pinkie and the ring finger and you can just follow it down around the bone of the wrist and we're going to go about one hand breath down. So, you see where my finger falls into a divot; if I measure with my hand breath, it's about the same place. And so, if you are actively constipated, this will be quite tender and you want to use pretty firm pressure on this point in a clockwise direction. Another thing that is helpful in addition to using acupressure on TB 6 is abdominal massage in the direction of the large intestine. Now, the large intestine actually makes an upside down L down the left side of your body, easy to remember. So, any massage that you do on the abdomen, you want to go in a clockwise direction in order to facilitate peristalsis of the large intestine and allow you to have a healthy bowel movement. I'm Hilary Talbott and that was acupressure for constipation.
