Hi, I'm Katy Hill. I'm a fourth grade middle school teacher, and these are some things to do on the first day of school. You'll have lots of fun things to plan for the first day of school, but you have to intermingle those with some housekeeping things too. So, for example, you definitely want to make sure at the beginning of the day that you know how the kids are getting home from school. On my first day, before I've gotten to the end of the day, and I've had two or three kids come up and say, "I don't know how I'm getting home," and then you're racing to find out if their bus is about to leave or if their mom is waiting for them outside. So, if you can avoid that at the beginning of the day, everybody will be a lot happier. Also, there are drills that are expected that you know, and that the kids know, like fire drills, tornado drills, earthquake, and as much as we hope those things will never happen, you have to be prepared. So, it's best just to get that out of the way and make sure that everybody knows where to go and what to do should an emergency happen. I'm Katy Hill, and these have been some things to do on the first day of school.
