Hi, I'm Katy Hill. I'm a fourth grade middle school teacher and these are some ways to introduce rules on the first day of school. There are several ways to set up the rules for your classroom. Obviously, you can't really mess with the school rules, and so I let them know upfront these are rules that are set by our school by our district and these are rules that we can't do anything about. However, we have rules to set up in our classroom, and so if you will let the students participate with the rules too they're more likely to buy into them and they're more likely to follow them the rest of the year. So, I kind of guide them along with those and say, you know, how do we, how do we want to act towards each other? How do we want our classroom to be kept, you know what would you not want somebody to do with your belongings and with your things and from that we build not more than four or five rules that we can follow as a class and then you'll be surprised at how throughout the year they'll say, oh, you haven't followed rule number three or remember, we said that about rule number one. And so that's the, I think allowing them to take part in it is the most successful way to have a good set of classroom rules.
