Hi, I'm Katy Hill. I'm a fourth grade middle school teacher and these are some first day of school activities for fifth grade. For fifth grade even though most of these kids have probably been in the same rooms with each other for several years, they still may not have been in this exact same combination so it's important to make them comfortable with this new set. So, one thing I like to do is to have them introduce each other. Sometimes it's hard to talk about yourself, and so it might be easier to talk about somebody else. So basically you, I would probably pair them up yourself so that you don't have one person left without a partner, and then have a list of questions for them to talk about about themselves from their family to their hobbies to anything that they're interested in, and then their partner needs to be taking notes about some of those things. And so when the time is up, then each person can take a minute or two and just explain different things about the person next to them. So, they're getting to know each other, and then at the same time you're also getting to know the personalities and the likes and interests of each person in your class.
