First Day of School Teaching Activities
On the first day of school, it's a good idea to introduce the curriculum in a way that gets the students excited for the year to come. Conduct fun science experiments to engage the students with advice from an elementary school teacher in this free video on classroom techniques.

Hi, I'm Katy Hill. I'm a fourth grade middle school teacher, and these are some teaching activities for the first day of school. On the first day of school, I like to talk a little bit about academics and what we'll be doing for the, kind of outline the year a little bit. So, I teach math and science and there will always be days where you have to do some work that's not as exciting as others, but that's not how you want to start out. So, in fourth grade, we talk a lot about the scientific method in science, how to plan an experiment and then how to carry it out. So, on the first day, I like to do some kind of demonstration or experiment to get them excited and anticipate what we'll be doing for the rest of the year. One particular demonstration that you can do, that's not really involved, you have a can of Diet Coke, and then a can of regular Coke. So first, the students make a hypothesis about which one will sink when a bucket is filled with water, and most don't anticipate what will really happen. So then, we carry that out and they, you know, see which one sinks and which one floats. So by doing that, they get excited about things that they'll be able to do in the year, and they've already learned something that they didn't know on the first day.
