Hi, I'm Katy Hill. I'm a fourth grade middle school teacher and these are some first day of school activities for elementary students. On the first day of school it's really important that you learn their names. They want to feel like they are important to you, and you need to take time to do that. So, one way to do that is to have each student think of a word that's associated with their name. So, for example, if there was a little girl named Kera and she was kind, then she might associate that word with her name, and I like to make sort of a joke of it, let's say if I can name five of them at a time. Now, let's say if I can name all 10, and then you build up to the whole room. So they're having fun with it, and then also by the end of the day you can name them all. In addition, I think it's just really important to keep it fun, keep them moving, do things that build them as a class. That will set you for the rest of the year, things like team building activities and icebreakers and it's always a fun activity to just read to them out loud. Kids, pretty much of all ages, still like to be read to.
