On the first day of grade school, activities should revolve around introductions and tours of the school to get the new students comfortable. Plan out the first school day with advice from an elementary school teacher in this free video on classroom techniques.
Hi, I'm Katy Hill, and I'm a fourth grade middle school teacher, and these are some first day of school activities and questions. On the first day of school, I think the teacher has one main objective, and that is to have the students feel comfortable with you, feel comfortable with each other, and to be excited to come to school the next day and the rest of the school year. One thing that I really enjoy doing with my students is to introduce myself in a fairly elaborate way on the first day. They are always very nosy, and they want to know anything about you that you will tell them. So, they want to know about your family, about your background, where you live, if you're married, if you have children, all those things, so I like to make a PowerPoint presentation, and it just kind of gives them photographs of my family and where I come from, and then that lets them, you know, it brings that trust in, it helps them to be able to come to you and just kind of build that personal relationship. At the same time, they also need to be able to introduce themselves to you and to each other in their class. So, just throughout the day, at different points, they can, you know, tell about their family and tell about the interests that they have in their hobbies. Later on in the day, I like to take them on a tour through the school and introduce them to our administrators and the different faculty that work throughout the school, and the library and the gym and so on, and then they can get comfortable if they're in a new school as well.
