Hi, I'm Charlotte Lawson, a registered and licensed dietitian here in Tampa Bay, Florida. Now, if you're in a weight loss program, you're probably looking at different tactics to do in your diet, maybe herbs and spices to achieve that weight loss goal. In particular, I'm going to give you some information on lemongrass. Lemongrass is also known as citronella and actually is often found in a lot of Asian cuisines as a seasoning and spice. Now, there's some health benefits, actually quite a few health benefits to a lot of herbs and spices but those alone are not going to help you achieve that weight loss ultimately. Now, lemongrass in particular does contain a high amount of Beta Carotene. Beta Carotene is an antioxidant and all antioxidants help to remove the free radicals from our body. Now, free radicals have actually been seen to increase our risk for health diseases and chronic conditions so removing those free radicals is really a health benefit for you. Now, citronella or lemongrass has also just been proven for good calming effects which can maybe help with our stress levels and that stress level is something we want to keep down especially for a weight loss goal as well, also again just for that good calming effect and those antioxidants. It's also been proven for some digestive aid as well. You can add it as far as seasonings on foods or you can sometimes find it in a tea form or add it to a tea that you're having. Now, keep in mind, like I said, herbs and spices in general are a good addition to a healthy diet but not an ultimate answer for a weight loss goal. Any sort of weight loss program needs to ultimately be a negative calorie balance meaning less amount of calories coming in, more calories exerted and it should be a combination of both a healthy diet and an appropriate exercise program.
