Hi, my name is Jami Sharp, and I'm the competitive program director for Black Diamond Gymnastics and Sports Center in South Jordan, Utah. Today, I'm going to be talking to you about some of the safety issues that you might find in a gym, and how to avoid some of those situations. The first thing that's important when you're looking for a facility and need to look for safety, is making sure that all the proper matting is around every piece of equipment in the gym. When looking at a vault table, you can see that you need to have matting around the entire unit, the apparatus, to ensure the safety of the gymnast. If they were to go flying in one direction or the other, making sure that they have a safe landing surface, such as this pit over here. Or, just making sure that they can perform those skills with the proper matting around the boards, or any type of apparatus in the gym. Another thing you want to look at, is making sure that the coaches understand progression in a skill. When teaching a skill, you either need to spot the gymnast through the skill, and help them learn the proper form and landing positions, or you need to make sure that the matting is available, and progress through the skill. That's another way to make sure that this facility that you're going to, or doing gymnastics in, properly uses safety techniques. USA Gymnastics actually has a program for all coaches to become safety certified. It's extremely important that the coaches that you are working with,or have your children working with, are safety certified. That will include any type of problems that you may have with any apparatus, or even just with basic skills in gymnastics. Once again, my name is Jami Sharp, and we have been talking about important skills and safety in gymnastics.
