Hi, I'm Victoria Warfel with DreamDogz Training, located in Gainesville, Florida, here to talk with you about how to train your dog to stay by your side. To get your dog to stay by your side, you want to start with the name game, and then we move to focus. This is what I call it. You want to be in a room with little distractions and have a pocketful of yummy treats and your dachshunds. There's not that many distractions. He's going to get bored pretty quickly, call his name as he looks at you, he gets a reward, he gets a treat. Walk a couple steps away and call him again. He'll look at you, he'll get the treat. So, he starts responding quickly to his name, you know, Bob, yes, here's the treat, and as you walk around the room doing this, just a couple steps in between each time, your dog will start following you more around the room and as your dog starts checking in with you more, you can reward that. Any time your dog looks at you, you can reward it. And as he's checking in with you, that's focus, whenever you're not asking for it. You want to be consistent that you don't want to do this while you're on the phone or talking with a friend or watching TV. You want to do this whenever you can devote time to paying attention to your dog and your dog alone.
