Hi, this is Jason Morgan with Muscleworx Fitness in Carolina Beach, North Carolina. Today, we're going to talk about how to gain weight using protein. When you're wanting to add weight, we want to make sure that we're adding quality weight. So, that tends to be muscular weight. We don't want to put on a whole lot of body fat. We're after, generally, the best physical appearance that we can have, as well as the added benefits of having an increased muscular mass and increasing our metabolism, because of the metabolic effect of muscle. When we're looking to gain weight utilizing protein, there's a number of sources that we can use, whether it be using whole foods such as eggs, lean protein such as chicken, red meat, pork and fish, up to supplements such as protein powders and meal replacements, whether they be, you know, pre-made or ready to drink, or it's a powder that we mix some type of concoction together combining berries and different nutrients, such as that to add to our overall nutritional profile. We want to make sure that we're meeting our protein requirements. Traditional school of thought is that we want at least one gram of protein per pound of body weight. Now, I tend to vary from that and say you should get at least one gram of protein per pound of lean body mass. If you're 250 pounds and 80 pounds of that is body fat, we don't want to take in that extra 80 grams or more of protein. If you're a hard core body builder, you may utilize 2 grams of protein per pound of lean mass. So, we have to kind of determine what our goals are and where your fitness level is. Make sure you consult with a Certified Fitness Professional, a Registered Dietitian or a Nutritional Consultant to meet your proper goals. Those are a few tips and tricks on how to properly gain weight while utilizing protein.
