Hi, I'm Melody Schoenfeld with Flawless Fitness in Pasadena, California, and I'm here to talk to you about building chest muscle using dumbbells. Now, if you want to build muscle, you have to lift heavy. You have to. You have to lift at a weight that is heavy enough to really challenge you, but at the same time you can keep your form really, really well. Now, I'm going to be doing an exercise on a Swiss ball which means that the weight's not going to be as heavy as it could be on something that's not as, that that's a little more stable. This thing is not stable 'cause it's round, and by definition that means you are going to be doing this. Right. So, if you are going to be doing this you can't lift quite as heavy. However, there's benefits to doing this which means you are going to be working a lot more stabilization and that's where a lot of people have trouble. So, if you are going to lift heavy and you are unstable, you are going to injure yourself. So, we are going to do a little combination. What I am going to show you is a one arm fly off a Swiss ball. And the Swiss ball is going to serve as your weight bench. So, just by nature of being on the Swiss ball, we are automatically working the butt, working the abdominals, working the lower back and making our body have to stabilize a little more. Plus your hammies are working like crazy, these muscles in the backs of the legs. So, with the dumbbell you are going to press your dumbbell of appropriate weight straight up over your head and you are going to bring it out to the side. Right. Now, when you do a fly you don't want to go back behind your shoulder. I know you are going to be tempted to do that stretch but what's going to happen is you are going to give yourself a nice little shoulder injury. And we don't want that. So, all I'm doing is bringing my arm out to the side and bringing it back up keeping it as long as possible. Right. It's not locked out but it's really long. And that's all there is to it really. You are going to build some real nice stabilization through your chest that way. And that way you'll be able to press much heavier weights later on cause you'll be a lot more stable. So, this is Melody talking about how to build chest muscle using dumbbells.
