Hi, I'm Gretchen Rivas with Relax! Massage Therapy, and today we're going to talk about how to do petrissage. For this, you will need oil, a massage table and work space. Petrissage is basically a term for the, a kneading stroke in Swedish massage therapy. And with petrissage, basically, you're lifting and grasping. With effleurage, you know, you're gliding. But, with petrissage, you're lifting and kneading and grasping the tissue. You can do one-handed petrissage; you can do two-handed petrissage. You can get in here and, and use your hands to lift up the tissue and separate things if you want to. But, the main thing with it is it's an action of picking up the muscle and trying to separate and lift and differentiate the muscle fibers from one another. And that's basically the main things that you do with petrissage and you always combine them with other strokes. You don't do petrissage and that's it. In a massage you use, combine that with effeurage and friction and other types and techniques of massage. But, petrissage is one of the main things that you can do in Swedish massage to help the muscles relax and release toxins and everything else. And when you're done with that, always clear them out with some nice effleurage after you're done. But, that's how you do petrissage in Swedish massage.
