Hi, I'm Kristen Smith-Hilton, global fashion stylist and beauty expert, as well as the President and Creative Director of Novella Style Group. One question that is asked to me very often in the various clients I work with is, how do I walk in extremely high heels? Carefully and gracefully, as well as for those clients that compete in pageants and need to have other appearances. Well, it's very, very difficult to walk in very high heels. When you are competing in a pageant and wearing a pageant heel, the pageant itself will dictate how high the heel needs to be. For the norm, it is about four inches. So, you're going to have to be able to maneuver your way up the stairs, down the end of the runway, hit your mark, do your turns and move back and all of this without the help of an expert and smiling the entire way. This can be very, very dangerous. Runways can be very slippery. One trick in order to walk is to put a little bit of resin on the bottom of the shoe, or baby powder if you don't have resin handy. Another thing and Manolo Blahnik is not going to like what I'm about to say, is to take a little sandpaper and rub it along the heel, and as well as the ball of the shoe to give yourself a little bit more traction. Walking in very high heels is exactly the same as you've learned to walk for years. It is heel toe, heel toe, but the important thing when walking in very high heels and/or pageant shoes is to get off that heel as quickly as you can and onto the ball of the foot, so as not to have the disastrous broken heel. That is not going to complete the catwalk the way that you want it, and the scores that you want while competing in a pageant. Again, I'm Kristen Smith-Hilton, global fashion stylist and beauty expert with pageant heels and very high heels and how to walk in them.
